School Visit

I traveled to Clayton, NC last week, to speak with elementary school classes about water conservation. I found myself arrested by their enthusiasm, knowledge and how impressionable they were. Together with a first grade class, myself and the students even went so far with the discussion as to delve into the role and effects of the sun on the water cycle as well as its size and relation to our planet. It was nice to have a day to dedicate to speaking with one age group after another, adapting and manipulating the method of approach on the subject as I picked up on the different characteristics of each group. One trait shared by all the classes however, was the willingness to listen, question, learn and respond. Many students asked how they should go about getting their older siblings, who “wouldn’t care” about the drought, to turn off the water as they brushed their teeth or take shorter showers. I thought it was funny to see their faces light up with so much excitement when I suggested “telling on them (the older and indifferent siblings) to their parents.”
